Sister Georgine Schweers

My first encounter with the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh came when I enrolled as a freshman at St. Benedict Academy.  I have always loved learning and the Sisters encouraged my curiosity about math and puzzles, words and many other things. It was easy to admire these women who were kind, interested in each student, and excellent teachers. In September, 1957, shortly after I graduated from high school, I entered the Benedictine Sisters. My life at St. Benedict Monastery has been filled with many blessings.

I have had opportunities to participate in many ministries:  as an elementary and secondary teacher, and working in various capacities with the elderly, I found meaning and fulfilment in helping others.  My math ability was put to good use in financial and business positions within my Benedictine Community and at St. Leo’s Parish in Pittsburgh.

I enjoy Pirate baseball and Steeler football. How great it is to get a ticket to one of the games! Music, crocheting, knitting, sewing, crossword puzzles, cards and reading are wonderful ways to relax and still learn new things.

More than fifty years later, I thank God for calling me to this Benedictine way of life.  I deeply appreciate our life of communal prayer, our leadership and history and being part of a loving Benedictine family. It has been an exciting and rewarding experience and I look forward to more years serving God as a member of the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh.
