Spiritual Spa

Most women are familiar with the word spa.  It conjures up images of
warmth and comfort, relaxation and refreshment, candle light, aroma
therapy and soft music. A gift certificate for a day at a spa is often a
perfect gift for a busy person.  But what about a Spiritual Spa —
what does that mean?

For more than ten years, the Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh have offered women the opportunity to step back from their busy, sometimes hectic schedules and breathe deeply.  Just as there is a need to refresh and renew the body, so there is a need to revitalize and recharge the spirit.  In addition to candles and music, prayer and meaningful discussion on spiritual themes, friendship and good food bring peace and strengthen the whole person — body, mind, spirit. The Benedictine Sisters of Pittsburgh refer to such an experience as a Spiritual Spa.

Participants from varied religious backgrounds and differing walks of life have shared their impression of the Spiritual Spa.

This was my first Spiritual Spa and I had no idea what to expect.  What I found was that the gathering was aptly named. It was truly a spa for the spirit … a time to rest, relax, and refresh. In addition, it was engaging and allowed me to meet new people who have become friends.

The Spiritual Spa has become a touchstone in the framework of each Lent or Advent season to enable me to pause and reflect on what is going on in my life, spiritually.  I always come away with a sense of peace and renewed direction.  Women of like mind, whether they be the Sisters who conduct these sessions or the women who participate, have always given me new insight in the selected topics.  I look forward to them and to sharing them with friends.

The Spiritual Spa was just that – Spiritual.  Attending allowed me to step out of my busy, noisy world and step into a peaceful, prayerful world for one day with new friends.  Together with the Sisters, we shared thoughts, laughter, life experiences, and love and we gained an understanding of how to be happier and become better Christian women.  Time very well spent.  Looking forward to the next one!

Historically, the Spa has been offered at the monastery twice a year for women and has included the Sisters’ family members, oblates, friends, and women from surrounding parishes. The following four Spiritual Spas are scheduled to be held at the monastery during 2016.  All interested women are invited to attend:
