Sacred Spaces

Bethany House

Hospitality is central to the rule of Saint Benedict which states that all visitors "are to be welcomed as Christ."

Steeped in History

Bethany House has a very special place in history as part of the underground railroad. This home, built around 1831 along Bakerstown Road, was the last stop in the Pittsburgh area for slaves seeking freedom in Erie or Canada. The Brickell family, at great risk to their lives and livelihood, hid slaves in the attic until it was safe to transport them to their next stop.

Today this grand house, which is now part of our campus, is open to friends and family members of the Sisters. Bethany House visitors appreciate the historic charm and modern amenities of the house, from its beautiful staircase to its large front porch.
